Heide Nord & Anna Vovan. We hear something and do not find it

The exhibition "We hear something and do not find it" presents new works by Heide Nord and Anna Vovan in the Studio West of the Kunsthalle Darmstadt. The starting point is the signal as something that becomes perceptible without being clearly assignable. Satellite signals, heart tone recordings, language, light, and material traces form the basis for works that deal with transmission, storage, and disturbance. Heide Nord works with signals from weather satellites and atmospheric phenomena, which she transforms into image objects, paintings, and sound. Her works move between scientific images and speculative forms, questioning how fleeting appearances become visible through systems of measuring, mapping, and recording. Anna Vovan starts with objects from her parents' household, which she understands as material correspondences of language. In photographic processes, the objects dissolve into lines, shadows, and traces, approaching the quality of a sound, a spoken word, or a memory. In the interplay of both positions, a space-related installation emerges, in which image, sound, light, and material interact with each other. The exhibition asks what remains audible and visible when signals are disturbed, language misses its target, or recordings leave more open than explain.
