When collage and Van Gogh meet the state of the present

With Courant Van Gogh, the Kunsthalle Darmstadt will present an exhibition starting from September 27, 2026, which condenses paper works, spatial installations, and biographical reflections into an intense artistic experience. The Amsterdam multimedia artist Hilarius Hofstede will be introduced to a larger audience in Germany for the first time. Around 100 paper works and specially developed spatial installations create a space for viewing art, aesthetic experience, and art-historical curiosity.

Hilarius Hofstede at the intersection of collage, text, and image

Hofstede works at the intersections of drawing, photography, film, expanded sculpture, and language. His art follows the principle of collage: fragments are not smoothed out, but rather made visible as productive fracture points. It is precisely in this that the power of his works lies. They connect cultural memory, pop aesthetics, and psychological experiential spaces into a language that is both immediate and multifaceted.

Vincent van Gogh as a mirror of a vulnerable present

At the center of the exhibition is Hofstede's engagement with Vincent van Gogh. A copy of van Gogh's only printmaking, the portrait of his treating physician Dr. Gachet, serves as the starting point for a dialogue about vulnerability, care, and mental disposition. The juxtaposition of the historical artist figure and the present state of the world gives the exhibition a poignant relevance. Van Gogh appears here not as a myth, but as a resonance space for questions that continue to resonate to this day.

Around 100 works and site-specific installations

The presentation collects paper works from the artist's studio as well as from private collections. They are complemented by site-specific spatial installations that activate the architecture of the Kunsthalle. This creates an exhibition atmosphere in which lines, layers, and materialities direct the gaze and make the space itself part of the artwork. Hofstede's references to outsider art, art from a psychiatric context, non-European cultures, and Hieronymus Bosch expand the interpretive horizon.

Accompanying program with lectures and workshops

The exhibition includes the event series State of the Soul with evening lectures and a conversation with Hilarius Hofstede. Additionally, practical workshops under the guidance of Darmstadt comic artist Paulina Stulin, as well as a facsimile edition of an exhibition book collaged by the artist, will be offered. In this way, the Kunsthalle convincingly combines the visit to the exhibition with cultural education.

Conclusion

Courant Van Gogh promises not a quick show but a serious, sensually dense art experience.
