Vivarium Darmstadt | Admission & Parking

The Vivarium Darmstadt is a municipal zoo clearly focused on nature experiences, education, and species protection. Officially, the zoo describes itself as a place where visitors can experience around 1,500 exotic and native animals in 190 species across 5 hectares. This includes nature-oriented enclosures, terrariums, aquariums, and several animal houses that make the zoo particularly attractive even in bad weather or during winter months. The Vivarium is especially known for its walk-through kangaroo enclosure, petting zoo with African pygmy goats, zoo school, and several breeding and conservation projects. Its development began in 1956 as a school vivarium and led to its current location on Schnampelweg in 1965. Thus, the zoo continues to connect history, family outings, and environmental education in a compact space. ([zoo-vivarium.de](https://zoo-vivarium.de/))

Admission Prices and Online Tickets at Vivarium Darmstadt

Those planning a visit to Vivarium Darmstadt will find a clear and easily understandable structure on the official price page. Tickets can be purchased at the zoo ticket office or online, which makes planning especially easier on weekends, during school holidays, or for spontaneous outings. For adults, the admission fee is 9.50 euros. Children and students aged 2 to 18 years and people with disabilities pay 4.50 euros. For students, groups of 15 or more, and seniors, the fee is 8 euros. Family tickets cost 22 euros and are intended for two adults plus one to four children. Additionally, the zoo offers special rates for Darmstadt excursions, guided tours, and school or daycare groups. This is relevant for anyone searching for the keywords prices, admission, and tickets, as the official site not only lists a price but also breaks down the visitor situation very specifically by target group. ([zoo-vivarium.de](https://zoo-vivarium.de/eintrittspreise/))

This structure is particularly practical for families and groups as it makes the financial framework visible even before the visit. Schools and daycares from Darmstadt receive free admission during school hours upon proof, clearly positioning the Vivarium as an educational venue. There are specific conditions for groups with guided tours, as well as for visitors with participation cards. Additionally, wheelchairs and carts can be rented at the zoo, simplifying the visit organizationally. For effective SEO planning, this topic is particularly important: The most common search queries revolve not only around the pure price but also around whether online booking is possible in advance, what discounts exist, and whether there are special regulations for families, schools, or older guests. The zoo itself provides this information in a compact form. ([zoo-vivarium.de](https://zoo-vivarium.de/eintrittspreise/))

The question of an annual pass is also a typical search pattern for many users. However, the official pages of the zoo prominently display the day and group model, not a heavily advertised season pass. Therefore, for editorial classification, it is important not to artificially claim something in the content that is not clearly stated on the website. Instead, one should emphasize the real purchasing paths: online shop, zoo ticket office, group inquiries, and special rates. Those traveling with children additionally benefit from the zoo's transparent communication of its pricing structure, simplifying spontaneous outing planning. This makes the page highly relevant for searchers with the keyword vivarium darmstadt admission or vivarium darmstadt prices. The user not only receives an admission price but also a reliable orientation for the entire visit planning. ([zoo-vivarium.de](https://zoo-vivarium.de/eintrittspreise/))

Directions, Parking, and Barrier-Free Access

Regarding parking, Vivarium Darmstadt is very specific: There are parking spaces on Schnampelweg directly in front of the zoo. According to official visitor information, parking with cars, trucks, or motorized two-wheelers from Monday to Friday between 6 AM and 6 PM incurs a minimum fee of one euro; each additional half hour costs 0.50 euros, and a day ticket is 2.50 euros. Additionally, the TU Darmstadt parking garage at Lichtwiese can be used, which, according to the zoo's website, offers 467 parking spaces and also costs 2.50 euros per day. Those parking there can pay either in cash and exact change at the barrier or cashless via PayPal and booking through Book-n-Park. This combination of direct zoo parking and a large alternative parking garage is particularly practical for visitors, as they can choose flexibly depending on the time of day and occupancy. ([zoo-vivarium.de](https://zoo-vivarium.de/besucherinfo/))

The description of public transport access is also clear. From Darmstadt Central Station, take line 3 to Luisenplatz and then the L-bus to the Botanischer Garten/Vivarium stop. By car, one should follow the signs towards TU Lichtwiese/Vivarium. Those looking for vivarium darmstadt parking or a stress-free arrival will find reliable, official information here instead of general hints. This is particularly important for families with children, older guests, or visitor groups arriving in multiple cars. At the same time, the zoo emphasizes that public or alternative transport should be used as much as possible, which aligns with the location at Lichtwiese and the zoo's urban orientation. ([zoo-vivarium.de](https://zoo-vivarium.de/besucherinfo/))

Another plus point is accessibility. The Vivarium zoo describes its paths and facilities as accessible with strollers, wheelchairs, and walkers. According to the accessibility page, there are seating options every 30 meters along the circular path; there are a total of 30 resting places with more than 500 seats. Additionally, the Eulenpick café and beer garden have barrier-free access, and there is an inclusion toilet at the African enclosure. This is a real argument for visitors with mobility impairments, as the zoo offers not only a nature experience but also a relatively comfortable walk. For search queries like vivarium darmstadt plan, vivarium darmstadt weather, or vivarium darmstadt in winter, this information is also useful, as it shows that the visit is not solely dependent on good weather. ([zoo-vivarium.de](https://zoo-vivarium.de/besucherinfo/))

Especially in rain, wind, or cooler temperatures, the combination of barrier-free paths, many seating options, and the covered animal houses proves particularly sensible. The zoo also points out that animal houses close 30 minutes before the zoo closes. Therefore, those who want to plan their day efficiently should time arrival, walk, and breaks sensibly. For people looking for a relaxed family outing, this is very helpful: First arrive, then choose the route with the map, take a break at the Eulenpick café, and finally plan the indoor areas. Thus, the journey becomes not just the way to the entrance but already part of the visit experience. ([zoo-vivarium.de](https://zoo-vivarium.de/oeffnungszeiten/?utm_source=openai))

Animals, Terrariums, and Tropical Houses at Vivarium Darmstadt

The heart of Vivarium Darmstadt is its animals and the variety of habitats that come together in a compact space. The official website mentions 1,500 exotic and native animals in 190 species living in nature-oriented enclosures, terrariums, and aquariums. Loud monkeys, colorful birds, tropical fish, and exotic reptiles are particularly highlighted according to the homepage. Additionally, there are walk-through or very close animal encounters such as the kangaroo enclosure and the petting zoo with African pygmy goats. For search queries like vivarium darmstadt animals or vivarium darmstadt crocodile, this is central, as the zoo not only presents a classic collection but also combines a wide range of mammals, reptiles, birds, and aquatic species. This makes the place particularly varied and family-friendly. ([zoo-vivarium.de](https://zoo-vivarium.de/))

The zoo is also an important place for species protection and breeding. The official page points out that the zoo participates in numerous national and international breeding programs, thereby emphasizing species conservation work in Darmstadt. Notable successes include the world's first breeding of the crocodile tail-hump lizard and the zoo's world-first breeding of the little Vasa parrot. Such facts are relevant for SEO as they demonstrate the uniqueness of the institution and go far beyond the mere excursion character. Those seeking deeper information can quickly recognize that the Vivarium is not just a leisure destination but also a scientifically and educationally shaped operation with documented breeding achievements. ([zoo-vivarium.de](https://zoo-vivarium.de/))

It is also particularly interesting to note that several animal houses provide a tropical experience even in winter. The homepage explicitly mentions the aquarium and terrarium hall, as well as the tropical house, macaque house, and binturong dwarf otter house. This is crucial for the keyword vivarium darmstadt in winter and also for questions about weather-independent outings. While it may be cold, rainy, or windy outside, visitors can still observe animals indoors and continue the walk pleasantly. This is also supported by the official opening hours from November to February from 9 AM to 5 PM, the animal house-related closing time 30 minutes before the zoo closes, and the opportunity to experience the zoo in winter as a quieter, less crowded outing. ([zoo-vivarium.de](https://zoo-vivarium.de/))

A look at the site plan shows how diverse the facility is structured. Among other things, it marks the petting zoo, tropical house, tapir house, parrot house, African enclosure, terrariums & aquariums, Eulenpick café, zoo shop, zoo school, playground, picnic areas, beach area, and various enclosures. This is not only a practical tool for visitors but also SEO-relevant, as searchers often look for plans, overviews, or specific animal areas. The site plan makes it clear that the zoo can be understood as a circular path with several thematic focuses. Therefore, anyone wondering whether a short visit of two to three hours or a longer family outing is worthwhile receives a clear answer: Yes, because the facility is compact yet content-rich. This mixture of overview and variety makes the zoo attractive to many guests. ([zoo-vivarium.de](https://zoo-vivarium.de/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/rz_lageplan_200205_01.pdf))

History of Zoo Vivarium and Its Development in Darmstadt

The history of Zoo Vivarium begins on July 21, 1956. At that time, the school vivarium was opened as a provisional facility in an old greenhouse of the city gardening department in the Orangerie garden, equipped with 15 terrariums, as many aquariums, as well as small outdoor enclosures and aviaries. The official chronicle emphasizes that it was initially an institution specifically for schools. In 1961, the Kaupiana support association was founded, before the opening at the current Schnampelweg in 1965. There, the first standing buildings were created, including the aquarium and terrarium house and the small mammal house. Thus, a school project gradually transformed into a permanent zoological garden that aimed to combine education, leisure, and recreation. ([zoo-vivarium.de](https://zoo-vivarium.de/geschichte-des-vivarium/))

The further development shows how continuously the zoo has grown. Already in the 1960s and early 1970s, a cattle house, yak enclosure, owl department, zebra enclosure, quarantine station, wading bird house, predator house, terrace hill, and even a restaurant were added. The chronicle documents a facility that has expanded not abruptly but over decades. For today's visitors, this is important as it explains the mixture of historical structures and modern expansions. The zoo is therefore not a newly built theme park but a grown urban place with a recognizable history. This depth can be emphasized in the content when search queries target history, special features, or background. ([zoo-vivarium.de](https://zoo-vivarium.de/geschichte-des-vivarium/))

Zoo education is also a historical core of the institution. The zoo describes itself as an extracurricular learning location where young guests can experience biology lessons with all their senses. An older but official zoo page also points out that the zoo school offers the opportunity to learn a lot about animals. Later, the zoo school was further expanded; an official announcement names 1991 as the year of construction for the zoo school. This makes it clear that the educational mission is not just an additional offer but a fundamental component of the Vivarium. For search behavior, this is relevant as parents, teachers, and group leaders often look not only for animals but for a place that combines learning and leisure. ([zoo-vivarium.de](https://zoo-vivarium.de/))

The recent development shows that the zoo now understands its role even more broadly: as a zoo, learning place, family destination, and event venue. The website provides information about opening hours, admission prices, events, accessibility, current job offers, animal sponsorships, and contributions to the preservation of endangered species. Thus, the Vivarium is not only historically grown but also well organized. This is exactly why the location is suitable for modern SEO texts that draw a connection from the founding in 1956 through the move in 1965 to current offers, digital tickets, and seasonal themes. The history provides not just nostalgic facts but explains why the zoo is structured the way it is today. ([zoo-vivarium.de](https://zoo-vivarium.de/nachricht/informativ-und-benutzerfreundlich-neues-design-fuer-die-website-des-zoo-vivarium-stadtkaemmerer-schellenberg-das-neue-layout-und-neue-zusatzfunktionen-fuehren-die-buergerinnen-und-buerger/))

Dogs, Rules, and Feeding Shows at Zoo Vivarium

When planning a visit, rules play a larger role than many initially think. Vivarium Darmstadt explicitly points out that bringing bicycles, scooters, balance bikes, roller skates, kickboards, and sleds is not allowed. As for dogs: They are generally not permitted in Zoo Vivarium, with the exception of guide and assistance dogs. It is also important to note that feeding the animals is prohibited and smoking is forbidden in the playground and all buildings. These rules serve the welfare of the animals and the protection of visitors. For search queries like vivarium darmstadt dogs or vivarium darmstadt dogs allowed, the answer is therefore clear and officially secured. The only area with an exception is the freely accessible beer garden at the zoo. ([zoo-vivarium.de](https://zoo-vivarium.de/verhaltensregeln/))

There are also clear guidelines for families with small children. Children under 6 years and individuals who cannot follow the rules due to their mental or physical condition may only enter the zoo when accompanied by an adult. This is not intended as a hurdle but as guidance for a safe and relaxed visit. Additionally, there is a note that visitors should not disturb animals with balls, loud noises, or tapping on windows. At the same time, the zoo illustrates its educational line: It is not just about showing animals but observing their behavior respectfully and naturally. Especially in a zoo with close contact areas like the petting zoo or walk-through enclosures, this self-discipline is important. ([zoo-vivarium.de](https://zoo-vivarium.de/verhaltensregeln/))

A special highlight of the zoo is the commented feeding shows. According to the official page, they take place three to four days a week. During these shows, the animals receive their food in front of the guests' eyes while the zookeepers share interesting and exciting information about the animals and their lifestyles. The feedings occur, among others, with snakes, capuchin monkeys, tapirs, and other species. The exact times and animals are displayed on a large notice board directly behind the entrance. So, for those looking for experiences, programs, or spontaneous animal observations, this offers real added value. This topic fits very well with the keywords plan, animals, and weather, as it makes the visit more attractive depending on the daily schedule and weather conditions. ([zoo-vivarium.de](https://zoo-vivarium.de/schaufuetterung/))

The opening hours are also relevant for the visiting practice. In March, the zoo is open from 9 AM to 6 PM, from April to September from 9 AM to 7 PM, in October from 9 AM to 6 PM, and from November to February from 9 AM to 5 PM. The ticket office closes one hour earlier, and the animal houses close 30 minutes before the zoo closes. The zoo is closed on December 24 and 31. These facts are not only helpful for daily planning but also for the SEO context surrounding vivarium darmstadt in winter. Those who arrive early have more time; those traveling in winter should consider the shorter opening duration. Together with the indoor houses, this creates a very planable visit. ([zoo-vivarium.de](https://zoo-vivarium.de/oeffnungszeiten/?utm_source=openai))

Jobs, Training, and Special Experiences at Vivarium Darmstadt

The search queries jobs and training make sense in the case of the Vivarium, as the zoo is not only a destination but also an employer and training facility. On the official page “Working at Zoo Vivarium,” the zoo refers to job openings at EAD and Zoo Vivarium, available training positions, and internships. This is an important note for applicants who wish to work in animal care, zoo education, administration, or in the context of a municipal operation. Additionally, an older job advertisement from the zoo points out that available training positions and the job portal run through the EAD career portal. So, those looking for a job at the zoo find the official entry not through general portals but directly through the municipal carrier structure. ([zoo-vivarium.de](https://zoo-vivarium.de/arbeiten-im-zoo-vivarium/))

There are also suitable offers for young target groups. The zoo youth club is aimed at children aged 10 to 14 years, runs school-year-based with eight sessions per school year, and costs a one-time fee of 100 euros. Additionally, there is the visit to the favorite animal for children aged six and up, where depending on availability, animals like Sarus cranes, king pythons, giant tortoises, pygmy goats, Karakul sheep, snowy owls, Greek tortoises, or otters can be chosen. Such offers are particularly valuable for families searching for vivarium darmstadt animals or special animal experiences. They show that the zoo thrives not only on observation but also on encounters, learning, and participation. ([zoo-vivarium.de](https://zoo-vivarium.de/zoo-jungendclub/))

Additionally, there are other bookable formats such as alpaca tours, photography workshops, zookeeper for a day, and thematic tours. The alpaca tours last one hour, take place on designated weekdays, and combine feeding with knowledge transfer. The zoo also describes feeding shows, events, and educational programs for various age groups. For visitors, this means: The zoo can be experienced in very different ways depending on interest, from the classic tour to targeted experience offerings. This makes it exciting not only for children but also for adults looking for a special activity in Darmstadt. ([zoo-vivarium.de](https://zoo-vivarium.de/alpaka-fuehrungen/?utm_source=openai))

Finally, the gastronomy is also part of the visit routine. The Eulenpick café and the beer garden are barrier-free accessible; the beer garden is located in front of the zoo entrance and is used in the summer months when the weather permits. Official announcements also mention that the café offers drinks and snacks and can be used as a space for celebrations or events. Together with the site plan, resting places, and zoo school, this creates a closed visit concept: arrive, orient, experience animals, take a break, and continue. For search terms like restaurant, restaurant prices, or weather, this provides a realistic and transparent framework. The zoo itself shows that a good family day consists not only of animals but also of paths, breaks, learning moments, and small comfort details.

Yesterday, we visited Darmstadt Zoo with the girls. It was cold and not too crowded. We saw peacocks roaming around freely, even in the parking lot. The girls found it very amusing. What really stood out was how unmanaged some areas felt. The tapirs' cage was extremely smelly, to the point where we couldn’t stand there for long. Sadly, many other enclosures also had unpleasant smells. The girls lost interest quickly, and we ended up leaving earlier than planned.

This is a small zoo in Darmstadt, suitable for a short visit of 2-3 hours. This zoo provides a friendly space for children and family activities.

Went for a couple of hours and I was actually pleasantly surprised with the diversity. Very good park and nice place to spend a day with kids. The internal restaurant is too expensive. Pretty cool activity to do in an otherwise mostly boring city.

This is a small zoo but with heart and soul. The animals are treated well, there was enough food and space for each inhabitant. Some animals were lent out to other zoos so not all areas were filled. Entrance fee is really good compared to other zoos I have been to. The prices of the small cafe were too high (~4€ for fries) and it took way too long (~20 mins waiting time for fries...?), queueing excluded. The area is accessible with a wheelchair and the parking lots are close. Will be back for sure.

It was a very nice experience, not too many animals but at least the prices were reasonable and conveniently few people and walking.
